EL CID FAQ
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Where is El Cid?
El Cid sits along the Lake Worth Lagoon just south of downtown West Palm Beach, bounded by Flamingo Drive, South Flagler Drive, Dyer Road and South Dixie Highway. The Flagler Drive waterfront path runs along its eastern edge, Palm Beach is directly across the water, and downtown is a few minutes north.
What kinds of homes are in El Cid?
Mostly single-family homes, many built during the 1920s land boom in Mediterranean Revival and Mission styles, alongside Monterey, Art Moderne and post-war homes. Larger waterfront-view estates line Flagler Drive, and the side streets are lined with smaller historic homes on established lots.
Is El Cid a historic district?
Yes. El Cid was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, with 281 historic buildings, and it is also a local and state historic district. Exterior changes generally go through the City of West Palm Beach's historic preservation review, so we help buyers understand what that means before they plan a renovation.
How did El Cid get its name?
Much of the land was pineapple fields in the late 1800s. In the 1920s, Pittsburgh socialite John Phipps assembled the property and named the development after Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the Spanish hero known as El Cid.
Is there a neighborhood association?
Yes. The El Cid Historic Neighborhood Association is an all-volunteer nonprofit that works to preserve the neighborhood's historic character and runs events and educational programs for residents.
Which schools serve El Cid?
Public school assignments are set by the School District of Palm Beach County and can change, so check the district's school locator for any specific address. We can also share private school options in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach.
