Leave the Car: Walkable Living in Jupiter and the Palm Beaches

by Matthew Pfohl

Coffee on foot. Dinner by the water. A ballgame down the street.

Most of Northern Palm Beach County was built for the car. A few places were built for the walk. They are small, they are specific, and they shape a very different kind of day.

Here are three we send people to when they say, I want to leave the keys on the counter.

Harbourside and the Jupiter Riverwalk

The feel: waterfront village, boats at eye level, sunset as a daily event.

The Jupiter Riverwalk runs about two miles along the Intracoastal, from the Jupiter Ridge Natural Area north to Harbourside Place. Along the way: the Lagoon Bridge, a local favorite for birding and sunsets, the Jupiter Yacht Club marina and the plaza at the Indiantown Road bridge. Harbourside itself is the anchor. Shops, restaurants and hotels around a working waterfront.

Plans call for carrying the path north around the Oxbow at Burt Reynolds Park toward the Jupiter Inlet. When that link is built, the walk connects the village to the inlet and the lighthouse.

Who it fits: boaters, second-home owners who want lock-and-leave with a view, and anyone whose ideal evening starts with a walk to the water. It pairs naturally with our Waterfront | Boating lifestyle.

Downtown Abacoa, Jupiter

The feel: a real town square, front porches, a college-town pulse.

Abacoa is a planned community of more than 2,000 acres, started in 1997 on new-urbanist principles: homes, shops and civic space close enough to walk between. It holds more than a dozen neighborhoods, each with its own pool and amenities, around a walkable town center.

Two anchors give it a rhythm most neighborhoods never get. Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, opened in 1998 with 6,871 seats, is one of only two ballparks in Florida that hosts two Major League teams each spring, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. And Florida Atlantic University's John D. MacArthur Campus brings a science hub, including FAU's Brain Institute, to the neighborhood.

Who it fits: families who want a bike-to-school life, buyers who like a calendar full of something, and anyone who values a neighborhood where you know the barista's name. Compare it with the rest of the area in Jupiter vs. Tequesta.

Nora District, West Palm Beach

The feel: new energy, wellness-forward, the city's next chapter.

Nora sits along North Railroad Avenue in the northern end of downtown West Palm Beach. It describes itself as the place where fitness, dining, lifestyle and hospitality meet, and it is filling in fast. The Nora Hotel is open. So are Gro Yoga & Wellness, Nora's Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, LUCE Fine Jewelry and Broken Sound Records. Del Mar, a Mediterranean restaurant, opened in the district this spring. Sports & Rec is on the way.

Who it fits: buyers who want an urban week and a coastal weekend, and people who build their day around a morning class. It overlaps with our Wellness lifestyle. For the full picture, see our Nora District page.

How to choose between them

  • If the water is the point: Harbourside and the Riverwalk.
  • If community is the point: Downtown Abacoa.
  • If momentum is the point: Nora.

Then ask the practical questions. How much of your week would you really walk? Are you trading a yard for a terrace? How do parking, guest access and season-time crowds work at the specific building or street you are looking at? Walkability is a lifestyle. It is also a set of trade-offs, and they differ block by block.

That is the work we do in our Downtown | Walkable Living practice: matching the walk you want to the home that delivers it.

Live with intention. Start the conversation.
